As we spring into spring, this new season allows us to truly call new beginnings into our lives. As the grass greens and the flowers bloom, new energy is floating all around us! We have all heard of “Spring Cleaning” whether that means clearing out your closets or your skincare. Spring allows us to assess everything in our lives that is holding us back and to remove what no longer serve us.
Cleaning up your skincare routine is very simple, but let’s start with the facts! The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not require companies to test their personal care products for safety. In fact, out of all the chemicals used in skin care products, only 20 percent or less are actually tested and reviewed. Manufacturers can add a wide range of chemicals, synthetics and perfumes to their skin care products, and can leave them out off of product labels if they see fit. There are an estimated 80,000 unregulated chemicals on the market today, being hidden in personal care products that have been linked to negative health consequences. In the EU over 1,300 chemicals have been banned for use, while here in the states only 10 of those same ingredients have been taken off the mark
Clean beauty is truly available to every person, on every budget, and you can take steps to reduce the amount of harmful toxins you are being exposed to. Be your own activist and researcher! There are so many wonderful resources out there to use, like the Think Dirty app that downloads to your phone or the Skin Deep Database that works as a scanner to tell you the toxicity rating of a product you might be interested in. The Environmental Working Group or EWG is another great option that takes on a whole bunch of environmental issues, but is also addresses the unsafe nature of harmful ingredients in our skincare and beauty products. It’s also important to not get overwhelmed when you take the plunge into Clean Beauty, it is not a one size fits all. For someone who is looking to clean up their skincare routine with budget in mind, I would recommend starting with the products that you use most often. Start with a cleanser or moisturizer, something you use everyday and can’t live without. Lena Rose is here to save the day! All of the products we carry are safe, non-toxic and good for the environment. Here are some easy skincare swaps to make to spring clean your skincare routine!
Ditch the drugstore cleanser for an omega fatty acid rich cleanser like Maya Chia’s Great Cleanse Supercritical Cleansing Oil. Effortlessly remove makeup and debris while evening out skin tone and calming over sensitive skin. Soothing natural botanicals, such as Roman chamomile, Lavender, Neroli, and Absolute Jasmine, calm the skin for a radiant glow. The Great Cleanse uses the highest quality natural, organic and wildcrafted ingredients from conscious growers across the world. This cleansing oil is never formulated with parabens, phthalates, synthetic fragrances, PEGs, and SLSs.
Think of a toner as a morning spring hydrating dew drop. Jardin de Fleurs Skin Revitalizer refreshes and softens skin while gently restoring elasticity. Raw Coconut Water and super low weight Hyaluronic Acid deliver and hold intense hydration leaving skin plump, moist and dewy. This awakened state of the skin helps for easy absorption of active serums and moisturizers and effective delivery for high performance.
Don’t be fooled by the department store glam, most mainstream products contain parabens, surfactants and drying alcohols. Osmia Organics Purely Simple Face Cream for sensitive skin contains simple, pure, plant-sourced ingredients and tiny amounts of the most precious essential oils, to give moisture with very low potential for irritation or adverse reaction.
This goes for sunscreen as well. We need sun protection even when it is overcast outside. Sunscreen can be one of the most toxic products you put on your skin, especially when you are soaking in it during the summer months! Suntegrity Skincare created an all in one, “UV Chemical-Free” Tinted Sunscreen that treats, hydrates, protects, primes and covers the skin with supercharged antioxidants that help to protect from surface free radicals.
Truly safe, non toxic products are becoming more accessible with brands like Maya Chia, La Bella Figura and Osmia Organics pioneering the movement to more sustainable and healthy skincare products.
